The Isles of Scilly Named among the World’s Top Destinations 2010

December 10th, 2009

Renowned international travel guide Frommer’s – has named the Isles of Scilly as one of ‘the’ top 10 destinations in the World to visit in 2010.

The only UK destination to make the list, the Island archipelago, which lies 28 miles off the tip of Lands End, the Isles of Scilly was named in the top 10 along with other destinations such as Hanoi, Copenhagen, Hawaii and Abu Dhabi, it is the first time that the Islands have made the prestigious list.

Compiled from feedback from travel industry insiders, travel writers and for the first time, from Frommer’s readers in the publication’s first Reader Favourite, Frommer’s annual Top 10 places to visit is eagerly awaited by the international travel industry.

Tourism leaders on the Islands, who have just overseen the launch of the brand new Isles of Scilly 2010 brochure – Simply Scilly – say they are delighted at having received the Frommer’s international accolade.

“Getting into Frommer’s Top 10 destinations list, which is much anticipated by travel lovers around the world, is a major coup for us. When you look at the other locations we are rubbing shoulders with, and consider we are the only UK destination to make the list, it is the perfect way to kick start the 2010 season.

“We have just launched the new 2010 brochure, have enjoy unprecedented television coverage this year, most recently with a major profile on BBC Countryfile in addition to being featured on BBC Top Gear all of which has resulted in extremely positive enquiry levels for next year already, so to have this accolade on top of that, is fantastic,” said Isles of Scilly Tourism Officer Kate Sleep.

Launching the 2010 list, Frommer’s commented: “As in years past, they (the destinations listed) represent a mix of emerging spots, under-appreciated cities, and places we think you need to experience before they’re overrun by tourist crowds. While authors and editors again contributed their suggestions, this year we reached out for some additional advice. During October and November readers from around the world nominated their favorites and then voted for this year’s inaugural Reader Favorite. The one element that connects all of these? We can’t wait to go.”

Frommer’s wrote of the Isles of Scilly – The islands are a collection of secluded sandy beaches, Bronze Age burial chambers, and rocky promontories, and a smattering of beautifully located cafés ensure plenty of diversions — such as kayaking, sailing, and windsurfing — en route. There are five inhabited islands: St. Mary’s, Tresco, St. Martin’s, St. Agnes, and Bryher, along with more than 150 uninhabited ones that lay scattered across the shallow turquoise seas. Fringed with beaches of soft, pale sand, the archipelago has the exotic appeal of some faraway holiday paradise, an impression enhanced by the balmy, frost-free climate and colorful subtropical plants.

“At a time when destinations around the World are working harder than ever to attract visitors, making the Frommer’s Top 10 list is something we are extremely proud of,” added Kate.

Walk Scilly 27th March – 3rd April 2010

October 29th, 2009

Walk Scilly is a unique showcase of the special environment of the Isles of Scilly. Did you know for example, Scilly has the highest concentration of prehistoric burial sites in the UK? Or some of the greatest numbers of historic shipwrecks in Europe? Or that it’s a mecca for rare migrant bird species?

The seven day festival sees a series of themed guided walks taking place across the Islands. A variety of local experts lead over 20 walks, on topics such as archaeology and gardens, flora and fauna, castles and cliffs, beaches and birds, bats and boats.

There are additional talks and presentations in the evenings, an opening night dinner and dance with some special guests (to be announced!) and a final day charity walk around St Mary’s involving as many locals and visitors as possible.

Springtime is also a lovely time to visit, with golden fields of narcissi still in flower. Witness the immense power of the Atlantic on an exhilarating clifftop walk or wonder at the vivid colours evident on many Island beaches and coves.
The majority of the landscape you see is actively maintained by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, a charity responsible for the unfarmed land leased to it by the Duchy of Cornwall. Their job is to manage all this land, to preserve and protect the wildlife of the Islands and the sea, and conserve or restore the habitats, landscape and archaeological sites for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.

Reduced flights for the Walk Scilly Event £106 per person .

Bookable through Penzance Reservations on 01736 363871.

Was Obama in Penzance? Helicopter firm reveals the truth.

September 8th, 2009

marine 1 -1The questions on many lips in West Cornwall this week; did the most powerful man in the world make a flying visit to Penzance?

Following a period of intense activity at Penzance’s heliport, pictures taken there apparently show the helicopter used by the President of the United States, with its distinctive green livery, touching down.

The aircraft landed within full view of passengers waiting to travel to the Isles of Scilly and was swiftly moved into the heliport’s hangar.

The event coincided with a break in President Barack Obama’s public engagements, leading to speculation about an impromptu visit to Cornwall.

Now, British International Helicopters, which operates flights from the heliport to the Isles of Scilly, has stepped forward to solve the mystery.

The company has revealed that the helicopter was actually one of its regular aircraft, temporarily reliveried and on hire to a film production company.

It was used in the filming of “A Special Relationship” charting the relationship between former US President Bill Clinton and Tony Blair.

The film, which stars Michael Sheen and Dennis Quaid, is a BBC / HBO

co-production and will be released theatrically next year.

marine1-2The lookalike helicopter was piloted from Penzance to the filming location by British International Helicopters’ Operations Director, Ron Walker, who lives near Penzance.

He commented: “This was an unusual assignment, and I’m sure would have raised eyebrows right along our route. I know all of the crew at Penzance enjoyed playing their part in preparing the ‘President’s Helicopter’ for its special mission.”

To the untrained eye, the Sikorsky S61 fleet used by British International Helicopters between Penzance, Tresco and St Marys looks like the VH-3D models used by the US President.

The 18 metre long aircraft, as used by British International Helicopters, can travel at up to 166 mph with a capacity of up to 24 passengers and their luggage.

Just as the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet carrying the President is known as Air Force One, so the helicopter carrying him operates under the callsign Marine One.
