| The Islands | | St Mary's |
St Mary's is the largest of the inhabited Islands and consequently the centre of all Island commerce. It is the hub of commercial and social life and it is also the main destination for day-trippers.
Hugh Town is only a few minutes drive from the Airport and a bus service meets all British International flights. The fare from the Airport to the middle of Hugh Town is currently £4.50 return/£2.50 one - way.
Inter-Island Boat Transfers
The main Inter - Island boat service operates from the quay at Hugh Town, connecting the other Islands with regular schedules plus many excursions. Exact times and landing places are dependent on tides. Whether on holiday or on a day trip there is much to see and do in the peace and tranquillity of St Mary's.
Gigs were originally used to carry Scillonian pilots to approaching ships. They were also used to rescue people from wrecks, for salvage work and for lighthouse relief. Gig racing is the most popular sport in Scilly and a great attraction to visitors. Throughout the summer on Wednesday, and on Friday evenings the Islanders compete in races in the six -oared gigs. The world gig championships are held each year during the month of May .
British International offers discounted fares for gig rowers during this event. Please contact the reservations team .
